Each SharePoint version has a lifecycle. The lifecycle begins when a product is released and ends when it’s no longer supported. Knowing key dates in this lifecycle helps you make informed decisions about when to upgrade or make other changes to your software.
What does end of Mainstream and extended support mean?
When a product is released it receives full Mainstream Support. This includes the ability to request design changes, security updates, other updates, complimentary support and paid support for more complex issues.
Once that runs out, the product moves into Extended Support. In this mode, it no longer issues security updates and fixes. All calls to Microsoft’s Support team (including calls made by Microsoft Partners like M.R.S.) will be charged full price, even if the resolution would normally result in a no-charge incident when the product was under mainstream support. In short, if you’re still using SharePoint 2007 or 2010, you will still be able to resolve your issues but it will be costly.
The Option? Update
The solution is to move to a newer version. But which one? SharePoint 2016 launched in May 2016 and Microsoft has a roadmap of features that will be released gradually.
If you are on SharePoint 2007 then you should be in near panic mode as your upgrade window is quickly closing. Consider an upgrade/migration to 2013 as a possible step as migration tools are available. Be aware that heavy 2007 customizations will mean added work to get up and running in 2013.
For organizations on SharePoint 2010 this is a good time to think about SharePoint and how you are using it. An on premise upgrade to 2013 or 2016 may be warranted. However, an exploration of Office 365 with SharePoint Online is highly recommended.
